The 2006 Global Village Team has just returned from an amazingly successful trip down to Guatemala.  They worked hard to plan their trip and raise funds.  The money earned from fundraising helped to cover the costs of travel, as well as supplies for the houses they built.  The team hiked mountains, swam in waterfalls, helped build two different houses, painted and cleaned up a local school as well as experience the culture of Coban, Rabinal, and Antigua.
-Applications will be available late Spring for the 2007 Global Village trip.

Keene State College has participated in Global Village trips since 2001.  They have been to Costa Rica, The Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.  A strong relationship was formed with the Habitat affiliate in Guatemala in 2004, and the hope is that they will now return to this country each year.  The group will spend 5 days learning the culture of Guatemala and 5 days working side by side with the families who will live in the homes.  Also, students will collect school supplies and distribute them to a school in the region that they will work in.  Houses built by Habitat in Latin America are built very simply, with cement blocks stacked on top of a foundation and filled in with a cement mixture.  The students will be exercised physically, mentally, and emotionally in this life-changing experience.

"One of my most poignant memories is a conversation I had with Maria Elena, A Habitat volunteer and home recipient.  She spoke in length about how the town of Rabinal had lost hope.  Wounds of the recent civil war were still fresh in Rabinal, where over twenty percent of the population was massacred in the late 1980's and early 90's.  She then looked at me and said, 'Thank you for brining hope to our community.'"             ~Christine White  -  Global Village '04

"Through working with the masons in Rabinal, I realized that verbal communication is not necessary to complete a task, but with a patient heart and a persistent mind no seemingly impossible task is too difficult to successfully complete."          ~Andrew Leone    -   Global Village '04

"I remember on one of the job sites that a little girl had wandered over curiously to see what was going on.  We were using an old metal barrel to store very dirty water in order to mix the concrete.  While I was working I glanced up to see her cupping her hands and drinking from the barrel.  My first reaction was to tell her to stop, but as I began to explain this to her, she looked up at me, and I realized that it is very possible that these children are used to drinking water as dirty as that.  In that moment I stopped myself from scolding her and began to really understand."       ~Sarah Barkhouse   -    Global Village '04
